The magic fillingElbert, a slightly-built boy, receives a filling from his dentist that is made of a new alloy. The filling acts as a receiver for radio stations at first, then develops into mind reading. This is the story of a 14 year old boy who has big dreams to play football. Because of his size, the coach doesn't even consider putting him on the team. But with injuries and Elbert's own perserverance, his dream comes true.

Forgotten Children: A Program for the Multihandicapped,
Published in Textbook Binding by Porter Sargent Pub (January, 1969)
Average review score:

Fun, Informative, and My All-Time Favorite BookI met _Forgotten Children_ in 1991, and my life has not been the same since. As a legally blind person interested in special education, I was fascinated by the description of an educational system developed for children who had cerebral palsy and were legally blind. More than the description, however, I was impressed by the authors' attempt to present the children as _people_, not as laboratory specimens. The in-depth look at selected cases helped to establish the students as real children instead of a bunch of statistics. This book is definitely worth reading.

Francis Preston Blair
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (February, 1980)
Average review score:

A most interesting and fascinating book!Francis Preston Blair was born at Abingdon, Va., on April 12, 1791, was editor of the Jackson Democratic paper, the Globe, from 1830 to 1845, and died Oct 19, 1876. I found this book written with a sprightly style and really enjoyed it. Francis Preston Blair was a confidant of Jackson and Lincoln, and the father of Montgomery Blair (Lincoln's Postmaster-General till the fall of 1864) and of Francis Preston "Frank" Blair, Jr., who served in the House of Representatives and the Senate from Missouri and was a Civil War general and, with Thomas Hart Benton, is Missouri's representative in Statutory Hall in Washington. Francis Preston Blair, Sr., was among the earliest Republicans, but reverted to the Democratic Party after the Civil War ended. His life was an extraordinary one, lived thru momentous years, and this is a good book to read. It is not overly scholarly--footnotes are not copious and there is no bibliography as such, but the author is clearly at home in the period (he has done a biography of Benton, and discussed it with John F. Kennedy, Benton being a figure in Kennedy's Profiles of Courage), and tells the story well. The period the subject's life covered is a period of high drama and one that has alwys been a source of fascination for me.

Hawaiian Grammar

Average review score:

The Definitive Hawai'ian GrammarThis is the definitive Hawai'ian grammar. It's a bit technical in spots, and descriptive rather than prescriptive. If you're interested in the Hawai'ian language and have some familiarity with linguistics, this is the best thing out there.

Problems and Answers in Navigation and Piloting
Published in Paperback by United States Naval Inst. (October, 1985)
Average review score:

Answers for all practicersThis classic navigation reference explains recent developments in satellite and electronic navigation and in the use of navigational computers and calculators. The most recent edition of Chart No.1 prepared by the National Ocean Service is also included. For a firm foundation in piloting, dead reckoning, celestial navigation, and radionavigation, and fast access to specific information, it is the reference to use. But, for an user, this is a better moment to practice navigation "on the paper".
